Q We’re going to continue working with ANOVA basketball.sav in SPSS that you used for lab 16. This is the Lab 16 Data on Moodle – we will continue using that. Go to Analyze ? Compare Means ? One-Way ANOVA. In dependents list enter Shots. In Factor enter Group. In ANOVA, we use contrast coefficients to indicate planned contrasts. We will only be dealing with simple contrasts with Oneway ANOVAs, so you just have to know that we take a group mean, multiply it by a contrast coefficient, and sum those products to do a comparison. There is one rule. Contrast coefficients must sum to 0. For example, if I had means for groups a, b and c, and I want to contrast means for group a and group c, my contrast coefficients would be 1, 0, and -1. When I add the products of my contrasts and my group means, I would get (1*a) + (0*b) + (-1*c) = a – c. Here, again, I am testing whether there is a significant difference between a and c. Go to Contrasts. You have to add contrast coefficients one at a time, and the coefficients must sum to 0. For contrast 1 of 2, enter 1, -1, 0. For Contrast 2 of 2, enter -1, 0, 1. Hit “continue”. Go to Options. I find it helpful to ask for “Descriptive” under Statistics, and the Mean Plot can be helpful too. Click OK for output. 1. What is my null hypothesis for the omnibus F test? 2. Do I reject, or fail to reject that hypothesis? 3. What is that telling me about my group means? 4. Write the appropriate sentence presenting the results for the current example. 5. Next are the Contrast Coefficients that you defined. What mean difference is the first contrast testing?
